Hello,

Sorry for double posting - this time I have take the effort to write in the
subject line!

Does anyone have any expereince of running ABAQUS6.4 on LINUX. I want to
buy a high end PC but I am worried some of the hardware may not be
compatible for the older versions of LINUX ABAQUS has been tested for.

Thanks for any dialoge.

Well if you want to use abq on linux, take into account that as of
version 6.4 it uses the Intel compiler, which is only supported on
intel cpu's. That puts AMD out of the game for *supported*
configurations. As for graphics, all you really need is to have OpenGL
and DRI support on linux, and decent drivers. So choose a graphics
card according to graphics driver support, and make sure the drivers
will not be broken by kernel updates (if you plan to update your
kernel, that is ;-) )

For counsel on the rest of the hardware, check the archives, this
question comes up at least once a month...

Hope this helps,

Fernando

We use a lot of abaqus on linux here in a university enviroment.

Watch out for the following things:
1. In order to run a patched up to date version of Redhat
you have to go with 9 until April and hope HKS can figure out
what to do after that to support Fedora or Enterprise versions ( last
contact with them they didn't know what Enterprise was or how to spell
Fedora). I think I must be their only linux OS testing support guy or
something. I even offered to send them CD's of Fedora and they
got mad and would hear of it.
2. Look at Suse which I've heard works well but I'm waiting on my
copy of Pro. Since I have 10+ other products I have to be careful
what vendor we go with so they all work.
3. Compilers if you need them. It seems HKS only supports Intel
compilers now ( switched from Portland, too bad you spent the $$ on
those ). And get this, if you compile something with Intel compilers,
read the fine print, Intel owns it!
4. Support from HKS on Linux problems is very sketchy at best. 6+
weeks to find a problem with a newer version of glibc that took my
student 2 hours to find first.

Please don't get me wrong, I would never say go the windows
route! Just be careful when you pick a product like abaqus
from a company like HKS which seems to be an infant on support to run
on a platform like linux which changes often.

Stay tuned for a report of what all I find on 6.4-1.

Enjoy!

Patrick,

This is very interesting. Which version of abaqus you are talking about? I
am trying (planning) to run Abaqus 6.3-5 on Dual Xeon machine using Red Hat
8.0 with nVidia Cards. I had already installed on a Pentium machine with
minimal config. Abaqus got installed with Red Hat 8.0 with nVidia GE Force
card. I thought it may be similar with high end machine - having dual Xeon
and RAM about 2 GB or more.

Do you suggest not to go for this route?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Sridharan
