Dear Friends,
I am trying to import an STL file into ABAQUS which is of a 3D geometry. It seems like ABAQUS can't directly read the STL file?? Therefore, I am firstly importing it into Solidworks but it is having difficulty in importing the file as solid or surface rather it only imports it as 3D graphics and therefore cannot be converted to IGS or SAT or STEP format. To read the STL files and convert it into a format which could be then be imported as solid in ABAQUS. Anyone know a simpler solution for it??

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Amir

An stl file is a triangular surface mesh, and with typically terrible
aspect triangles if you wanted to use it as a surface for a tet FEM mesh.
Basically its near impossible to convert to anything nice. Best bet is
to pester whoever gave it to you and ask for the source CAD file or
whatever.

There's a software product called Mimics, by a company called Materialise,
that will help you convert from STL to a model that can produce an ABAQUS
input file.

You could import the STL to Hypermesh, generate solid tetrahedron mesh
(10 noded) and export to abaqus. As Jeff already mentioned you may have
very tiny elements which have to be manually remeshed. I would say it is
fairly simple in Hypermesh compared to other pre-processors.
