Discussion:
Maintaining a materials database for CAE

Whenever I create a new file in ABAQUS CAE I have to create from scratch new
material properties. Is there a way to import from a database of material
properties saved elsewhere, and perhaps created and edit manualy, the
materials needed for the any new model file?

Two ideas come to mind. First, write a simple script or record your
key strokes with the macro manager. Second, create the materials and
then save the CAE and use as a template. Hope this helps.

Neither seem like really good solutions IMO. Even SolidWorks has a drop-down
menu where you can add materials after a model has been created... What I'm
asking for shouldn't be that hard for the developer to implement, and this
is my hope.

Hi,

A further possibility is to set up a sort of "home-cooked" database
with
a material specific directory, where all individual material data is
stored
in separate files (tables in ascii). Then it is possible to read in the
data
within CAE material setup (right-click table and read-in file). This is
not
very "elegant" but it helps to avoid repeated input of the same data
again and again (with a high probability of key-stroke errors...). It
also
allows to edit all material data directly (without need of
CAE-Interface).
And - yes - this is not a solution, but I consider it a feasable
workaround...

You could define the python script to create this material library and copy paste this onto the abaqus_v6.env as oNcaestartup module. This way every time you start CAE all the materials would get loaded!

Please look into abaqus manual especially the environment/exection section and the scripting section. If you could not make out I can send across the exact syntax - need to dig out from my old files.

Sridharan

To be more generalized Abaqus relies on the user to maintain
consistent units. Because of the many systems of units the GUI would
be difficult to implement. SolidWorks Cosmos on the other hand does
differentiate units. If you want to have a slick drop down menu
system that could be implemented in Abaqus as a Plug-in. Good luck.
