Discussion:
Export Abaqus mesh to other format

Hi,

Is it possible to export the mesh (not just geometry) from Abaqus?

Preferably I'd like to export the mesh to Fluent Gambit, but is it possible
to export the mesh in any format?

I have read through the manual, and all the export options seem to be
geometry only.

Any suggestion are most welcome,
Philip

Depends on which pre-processor you are using. In HM/ANSA you can always
export the mesh to Nastran format which is pretty much readable in CFD
codes like Fluent, Icem CFD, StarCD etc..,

If you are using Abaqus/CAE then you do not have a direct option. But I
believe it is doable with some amount of tweaking. I have seen people
exporting LS-Dyna deck from Abaqus CAE. But this would call for some
amount of mastery in scripting I would assume.

My advice is use HM/ANSA which makes like simple.

Regards,

Sridharan

Sridharan,

thanks for your reply.

I am using Abaqus CAE. I created my mesh in a program called IA-FEMesh:
http://www.ccad.uiowa.edu/mimx/IA-FEMesh/

This meshing software allows you to export to Abaqus only. But now I want to
use this mesh in other simulation softwares.

So is it possible to export the Abaqus mesh to HM/ANSA and then export it to
the Nastran format from there, or must the mesh have been created in HM?ANSA
for that?

With HM/ANSA you could easily (just a click of mouse) import your Abaqus
INP file, then convert (might require some efforts) to Nastran deck.

Heres another possible method. If you have access to Fluent 6.3.26 you can import the Abaqus input file into there. File>import>abaqus
Then you can write a fluent case file. File>write>case

Open up Gambit and then import the cas file. File>import>mesh>fluent.
Note you will only have the mesh and a virtual geomtery in Gambit. Works fine for me though as you can still remesh and use different elements.

Sridharan, David,
Thanks for both of your help.

I have not access to HM/ANSA, although I might look into it.

David, I do have access to Fluent 6.3.26, but I am not that familiar with
it.
I tried as you said and File>import>abaqus, but then I get an error when it
tries to read the file.
I tried reading other Abaqus inp files from the tutorials and they got the
same error.

Do I have to change anything in Fluent or should it work?

I have attached the mesh I am interested in, it is a femur (thigh bone).

Thanks again for the help,
Philip

That could be a couple of things, as far as i know Fluent will only import linear meshes. Maybe you're using a quadratic mesh? It think it will only read input files with only one part defined as well. So maybe you have several parts in your input file? If you strip your input file to contain just the node and element data for a single part and make sure its a linear mesh I think it should work. i.e. just have part, node, element and end part keywords. Good luck.

David,
It worked!

The '.inp' file was created in a third party meshing program, and has
another file referenced by the '.inp' file, which needed to be in the same
directory as the '.inp' file.

So your first instructions worked perfectly.

And the mesh loaded in Gambit fine as well.

Now I can export to other formats!

Thank you so much,
much appreciated!

There is a plug-in that will allow you to directly export an ABAQUS mesh
to Fluent. Logon to "My Support" at www.simulia.com, and perform a
search on "Fluent" in the "Answers" section. You should find a link
entitled:

"Plug-in utility for generating FSI fluid meshes in Abaqus/CAE"

The associated page gives instructions for downloading, installing, and
using the plug-in.
