transfer an stl file to IGES(*.igs) or STEP (*.stp) file

Hi, Everyone,

I had an .stl file from design. I tried to transfer it to Abaqus
readable geometry such as .igs or .stp file from our Pro/E, however I
don't know why it failed. Does anyone know any other software to do
the geometry format transfer from stl to .igs? It is better this
software is easy to download from web.

Thank you very much

Lily

Lily,

How did it fail? I can do that before using IGS or SAT file. Your problem is 3D or 2D??? Shell or solid problem.

Sam,

The original file is *.stl 3D model which is the surface
by triangle. I can read *.stl into Pro/E, however I can not made
geometry check. So when I save the file as .igs of .sat file,
the file size decrease from 2.6Mb to only 3kb. Abaqus
give the message of "Can not read the file, the file maybe
corrupted or not right formatted."
Do you have any idea of how to solve it?
Thank you very much

Lily,

The file size is only 3kb which is unreasonably small. Did you try the export function in Pro/E and export into IGES or SAT or VDA format? The format of Pro/E should be *.prt or *.asm. Why your original format is .stl? I can import IGES into cae in the past. What is your version of cae????

Sam,

I also tried export to IGES, SAT and VDA. All are failed with very
small 3kb file size. The custom can only provide us *.stl file
from a kind of art design software. I am thinking maybe the .stl file
need to repaired, however I don't know how from Pro/E. Our
Abaqus/CAE is v6.4.1. Do you know any other software is able to do
this kind of file transfer?

Thank

Lily,

Please check your stl is good enough. I copy here.

STL File Verification

So how do I know if my .stl files are good ones? Well, see for yourself. If your CAD package has the option, select 'Show STL Info Before File Saving' or 'Preview' when making your .stl files. That way you can get a glimpse of the output quality before saving the file. Better still, use a separate .stl file viewer to verify, to be absolutely sure. You can download VisCAM Solid Viewer, a very capable .stl viewer, for free here: http://www.marcam.de/Eng/Download/default.htm

Hope can help you and keep me progress.
