I suppose you have NT4. If you CNTR-ALT-DEL and go to the Task
Manager you
can highlight the process you want, then right-click on it and
then set the
priority to high ( avoid real time option ).
This will give the selected process priority to the CPU time. I am
not sure
if NT will allow you to actually increase the time but my
recommendation at
least will set up priorities right. Try this one first.

Subject: [ABAQUS] ABAQUS: CPU time
I installed ABAQUS on my PC (500Mhz 256MB RAM). Wenn I
start running
an
analysis it's much slower than my old Unix Workstation.
When I look at the task manager I see that only ten Percent
of the
CPU
time is used.
Does anyone konws how i can increase the CPU time used

hi,Manuela
Maybe ,the hardware of ur pc is too low to run ABAQUS.ABAQUS need
at least 256M RAM,and 1.5GHz CPU.mostly important,if u run it in CAE
mode,ABAQUS has a much higer demand for display
property.Obviously,ur pc is below that demand. If u wanna evaluate
the efficency of pc,there r two ways ,firstly,u can add larger RAM
or better display card in ur pc ,secondly, dispose of ur pc buy a
new one!
just my advice.

It's not your CPU that's hurting you, it's your free
RAM. Buy as much of it as you can afford and fit on
your motherboard. The reason it's so slow is that
your machine is likely using the hard disk for swap
memory. The interface from hard disk to cpu doesn't
have enough bandwidth to keep the cpu fed with the
data it needs, so it sits and waits.

It doesn't help either that everything that is in
memory also resides in the abaqus scratch files, so
you get a double hit if you're using swap for RAM.
This is where unix usually outshines Windows, it's
virtual memory system is better tuned for our types of
applications.
